3 Tips For Cleaning Your Brand New Hardwood Floors

Posted on: 18 November 2022

Your new hardwood floors cost you a lot of money. You want to protect your investment and make sure that your floors look as good as possible for as long as possible. The best way to do that is to know how to properly clean your floors.

Clean Up Spills

One thing to do is to make sure that you clean up any and all spills as soon as they are made, or as close to that time as possible. Spills that are left on the floor for too long can cause discoloration, cupping, or gaping in your floor. When you see a spill, use a dry cloth or one that is slightly damp to clean the spill up. Don't use a wet mop, unless you are planning on using a cloth to dry the floor, because the moisture left behind by the mop can do the same damage as the spill.

Sweep Daily

Sweeping your floors daily may seem like it is unnecessary, but it is necessary for your hardwood floors that you do sweep every day. Dirt and grit on your floors can leave scratches on your floor and you don't want that to happen. Use a broom or dust mop on your floor and get rid of all the dirt. If your vacuum has a hardwood floor setting, then you can use the vacuum on the floor. Just make sure that you switch the vacuum's setting to hardwood. That should turn off the beater bar. That bar could cause damage to the floor as you sweep. If you can raise the height of your sweeper, you can raise it up for more protection.

Furniture Pads

You should use furniture pads on the feet of all your furniture. That will keep the feet from scratching up your floor. If your furniture doesn't already have pads, you can get some from the nearest hardware or home goods store and apply them yourself. The felt pads have adhesive on the back, so all you need to do is peel the paper off the back of the pad and put it on the foot of the furniture. That will protect your floors and it can make it easier for you to move the furniture if you need to because the felt will slide over the wood easily.

Hardwood floors are beautiful and they can add to the attractiveness of your house. If you have spent the money to have brand new hardwood floors installed in your house, you want to make sure that you are cleaning them properly so that they will last for a long time.
